In 1966 Bob Park drove a 1957 Chevy station wagon down the drag strip while he was still in his late teens. Park and the six-cylinder car recorded a season-best of 17.23-seconds for a quarter mile run; and his top speed for that year was just over 80 m/pH.
This year, the Dundas resident still races a Chevy, but one just a little faster.
And in those intervening 45 years, Park learned how to build reliable and consistent race cars — how to race, and how to win.
He captured the 2011 Can-Am Stock/Super Stock championship this year in one of the series’ closest battles, winning the title by one point over Al Lozon, of Chatham.
“It was tight racing in the Can-Am Series this year,” noted Park, who won the title with his 1986 Camaro, powered by a 255-horsepower Chevy small-block.
“It’s now a driver’s race,” he said about the racing of today, compared to in the past. “Racing used to be all technical, whoever could build the quickest car. Now it’s up to the driver.
