Taking the family out for some serious four-wheeling will be even more fun with the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, the four-door/five-passenger off-road wonder, which now has an all-new engine.
There's even a new Wrangler pickup option — available only as an aftermarket conversion, however.
The new Pentastar 3.6-liter engine, which has 285 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque, replaces last year's 3.8-liter V-6, which had just 202 horsepower. It's the same engine that comes in the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, as well as a variety of other 2011 and 2012 Chrysler products, including the Dodge and Chrysler minivans, Dodge Charger sedan, Dodge Durango crossover and Chrysler 300 sedan.
For the Wrangler, EPA fuel-economy ratings are now 16 mpg city/21 highway when connected to the standard six-speed manual gearbox or 16/20 with the new, optional five-speed automatic. That's up from 15/19 for the 2011 models (manual and automatic).
The Wrangler is using this engine exclusively beginning with the new models — both the two- and four-door versions. The four-door is called the Wrangler Unlimited and has become the best-selling Wrangler since its 2007 introduction, Jeep product executive Chris Ellis said during a recent media preview of the State Fair of Texas Auto Show in Dallas.
